Authenticity, Confidence, Transparency, Integrity, Open-Mindedness, Decisiveness, Passion, Innovation, Patience, Focus, Inspiration, Personableness, Empowerment, Positivity, Generous, Restlessness, Whether you have the Wonkiness, Stoicism, or Genuine and Accountability — This are some of the famous words and advice from successful entrepreneurs.
Before thinking to address yourself with the noun, verb and adjectives above, please be honest with yourself, do some self-discovery. Are you a good leader? Do you want to be a leader? maybe even question yourself ‘Can I be a leader?’ Trust me the entitlement comes later. People will recognize you being their leader, even if you are not their superior. Many people underestimate their ability to become leaders because they have never thought of themselves as being out in front, taking charge.
If you truly want to inspire people, you have to be more of a psychologist than a taskmaster. Leadership is all about understanding people — learning what makes every member of your team tick. Some want to be inspired, some need tough love. Your job is to pull on all these levers to find the best ways to get your team to do the best work of their lives. Its fine and dandy to set a north star that anyone can march to, but ultimately people are unique.
I personally think that everybody has different ways to lead their team. Some leader works best on a start-up company, but once the company becomes bigger, he then starts to loose his balance to lead. Some are born in the situation where he has to be the leader despite he prefers to work with people that coddled him. When you are in top management, things can be different. All of your hard work may pay off when you reaching that cooperate ladder. Your co-worker can become a stranger, perhaps due to more time-consuming work you have to give in. Just be honest with yourself. Know what is right for you and set your priority straight. Do not chase after the title and numbers.
Be the leader you want to be. Be the leader you can be genuinely proud of. Everyone can be a leader, but, not just anyone can become a leader. Everyone can, however, develop their leadership qualities and put them to positive use in life every day, in and out of the workplace.
Funny thing is when I out of curiosity to look into a dictionary the word of:
1. the action of leading a group of people or an organization, or the ability to do this. “different styles of leadership” synonyms: guidance, direction, authority, control, management, superintendence, supervision; More
2.the state or position of being a leader. “the party prospered under his leadership” synonyms: headship, directorship, direction, governorship, governance, administration, jurisdiction, captaincy, superintendency, control, ascendancy, rule, command, power, mastery, domination, dominion, premiership, sovereignty.
So there are two different ways to look at leadership; the actions and the state. Please be a leader that capable of influencing others than just possessing a gift for leadership. Creates an inspiring vision of the future. Motivates and inspires people to engage with that vision.
Personal note: I have been working with many people who want to be a good leader and /or at least want to fulfill their leadership position with such fame. But they say, in the end, the final judgment comes to how much money or accounts you can bring to the company. What a sad world we lives in! For myself who been exposed with such a fast-paced, goal-oriented, wealth-hunger, luxury envy environments, Singapore can be the most stressful place to lives in. People here work like a chicken with its head cut off. If you are in middle management is the most unpleasant position one person want to be. Depending on the status of your employment, there is no fixed working hour, the company tends to excuse themselves from paying your overtime, limited benefit and be prepared to have no professional boundary at your workplace. Your boss can call you at 10 pm to talk about work, and what worse is she will make you feel bad for being home with your family than at work like her.
